Out of Africa directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Meryl Streep & Robert Redford
So I’ve just finished watching this 1985 ‘Out of Africa’ movie.
Very sad captivating soundtrack, I must say. A bit depressing, the melody as well as whole movie. Actually, what impressed me is the way how modern this movie looks. If you don’t think of latest roles of Meryl Streep you might believe it’s been filmed in 00s. It is really hard for me to think of any definite review of this movie. You know, the thing had been finished before I was even born, well, only one year before but still. It feels like something classic you can’t actually criticize freely or give your opinions straight away without proper thinking and decent analysis. So here I feel like I’ve watched ‘Casablanca’ for the first time once more. You know, you could truly judge a movie only a week or even later since you saw it. But here I just want to give it now. This urgent need to publicize the classic you’ve just got to know about and are fond of.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that anyone at any time would enjoy the movie. The piece is so filled with such special mood; the sense of time and the smell of Africa in it are very special. The piece is period.
It is strange to watch a film with lots of thinking in it, it is, of course, very pleasant. It is in a way flattering, the creators do think the audience a bit intelligent. The questions that are put up in this film are numerous and equally important: the way how to treat your life, a certain views upon marriage, love, relationships between a man and a woman, very important issues about colonialism, about relations between the white colonists and the black aborigines. And the movie is about Africa, a loving view at the African countryside, at the people, at the nature, at animals, the fauna, and the flora.
I shall not write much about professional level of this production, about actors or other crew. The job has been done well enough to draw our attention to the questions listed above, enjoy the movie and be comfortable with it (if you omit a couple of cuts where camera did move to fast to adjust one’s eye properly).

Psychoanalysis
I really love my first site http://freewebs.com/sonechko. I’ve created it even before I had any internet at home actually. I was so proud of myself, I had my own site and it was like 2003 or maybe even the end of 2002. I didn’t even have a computer back then; I was at school, last grade, doing my preparation courses at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. I used the British Council computer with internet access and I felt myself so cool to be able to do that. It was my little victory, my little secret back then – my own site, there was a CV. So that in summer when I was looking for a job on the job interview I came without CV but I had it online, which was very positive. They were sort of stunned. They loved it. I loved it too, of course:)
This might be one of the strongest reasons for my very warm feelings about the British Council.
And I am here actually to type one important conclusion I’ve just come to. It started with analysis of people around and ended with a very interesting personal diagnosis. So I just started with calming myself that it’s not me actually who is guilty of the failed relationships with various people (not only men).
I’ve elaborated a diagnosis for some of them as masochists. So they did have masochistic traits and at first I just felt relieved that it’s not me having a problem.
But then I have started to think that so I need to help those people, which means that I myself have a very urgent need to help people. And this might sound just like – oh, she is so in love with herself that she is typing it up here how altruistic she is. Oh, no. The result of me willing to help some (only some!) of those in need is that I actually need to help them.
Now it looks classic – the person who needs to be needed is the one in trouble:) Not necessarily in a big huge terrible trouble but still it’s about this person lacking self-esteem. I was thinking earlier that those my people with “masochistic traits” were obviously lacking self-esteem but now look at myself.
And I as well have some sadistic traits. That’s not really new, I am aware of some. So there is another evidence – I love being connected to people with masochistic traits.
This is difficult for me to say if this text above is to any extent understandable to the reader, but I just want to state that in any case I didn’t intend to say that anyone of my acquaintances or myself have any mental problems. This is just the narrative of the real life, this happens all the time and this is what a psychoanalytic won’t be interested in just because s/he’s studied that in the first years of university and seen that myriads of times.
