This is amazing how Jon McLaughlin managed to write the lyrics so close to what I myself think. That’s because humans are so alike. It’s easy to see that our lives are so much alike. And his song “Human” is really about realities we face every day.
After all we’re only human,
always fighting what we’re feeling,
hurt instead of healing
And this is what we do not only trying to make it harmlessly but trying to make it better, trying to fix the wrong and make things better.
life goes by,
and it leaves a trail of broken bones behind
And no one wants this place to get flooded by blood and hatred and full of broken hearts. But what we do to make it right needs sacrifices, what we intend to put into life always turns to be something else. People we percept as good and sincere turn to be not quite as they seem. And how can we make right decisions without proper analysis, enough of information and some time to think it over?
Can you tell me how we got in this situation,
I can’t seem to get you off my mind,
all these ups and downs,
they trip up our good intentions,
nobody said this was easy ride.
I love Jon for writing this as people usually expect relationships to be as easy as they see it in movies or read in books. But they aren’t. They not in the slightest degree are like this. It’s complicated as the life and no clichés would do for any situation which is in fact unique despite how much typical may it seem at first glance.
Can we get back to the point of this conversation,
when we saw things through each others eyes,
I wonder how exactly he chose this metaphor to describe the situation where you talk just to talk and suddenly you can’t stop smiling at the thoughts you see in his eyes, you can’t stop smiling as he can’t stop smiling at what you’ll never name, you’ll never speak about, you’ll never need to describe as it is indescribable, unspeakable, mystery and secret, and so sacred you can’t share it with the world, it’s too precious, too beautiful to just put it down in the words.
cause now all I see is ruin and devastation,
we all need some place we can hide inside
And these words are so fair to be said. We really need such place, everyone – those who can express themselves, who shout and cry, who laugh out loud and those who stay reserved and won’t share their feeling just like that. We need a place to feel safe in, we need someone to listen, to understand and to comfort us. The one we would love and read his mind (not to the very depths of it though). I can’t ignore here another song of Jon McLaughlin – “So Close”, in which he sings of “this famous happy end” – we all really need it in personal life to be able to keep on going, to keep on fighting, to be content. But we actually loose the motivation, our inner power to bring up new ideas, new streams, and some fresh air into our lives. That's what you call ironic.1
